Research

Glaucoma is the most common cause of irreversible blindness in the world, affecting 70 million people. It is known as the "thief of sight" as glaucoma can slowly worsen and cause severe loss of vision without the person even being aware they are affected. In fact 50% of people with glaucoma may not be aware they have it.

Research is essential if we are to develop better ways to detect and treat glaucoma and prevent glaucoma-related blindness. As an NHS Scotland Research Clinician, Andrew has a particular interest in developing new ways of treating glaucoma without eye drops. He has over 120 peer reviewed publications in journals including Ophthalmology, PLOS One, American Journal of Ophthalmology and Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science.

Andrew's research has won awards from The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, UK and Eire Glaucoma Society, The Scottish Ophthalmological Club and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
